The significance of Ramadan

Ramadan is the nineth month of the Islamic Calendar observed by Muslims by fasting, prayers and community bonding. This month is considered to be the commemoration of Muhammad’s first revelation. Ramadan is observed for one month from one crescent moon to the next. The wide and united observance of Ramadan is considered to be ine of the 5 pillars of Islamic community.

Ramadan month is daily fasting from dawn to sunset, a must for all adult Muslims other than tjose who have chronic or acute illness, people who are travelling, menstruating and breastfeeding mothers. A person following Ramadan rules can have a predawn meal, called Suhur and the evening feast called Iftar.

A person following the Ramadan rules strictly is said to earn spiritual rewards and blessings from Allah.  The followers not only have controlled fasting but also avoid any form of tobacco intake, sex and sins and completely devote themselves to prayer (Salat) and recitation of the Holy Quran.
